Measuring solar irradiance is a popular application with our customers. Some measure the UV-VIS spectra while others like to measure the complete range from approximately 200 nm to 2500 nm.

In this experiment, we’ll measure relative irradiance of solar light. Normally, one would measure absolute irradiance but not this time around!

The setup looks like this:

  • Jaz Spectrometer
  • CC-3 DA or CC-3 with fiber attached

And, our experiment goes like this:

  1. Make sure you have already performed the relative calibration of your Jaz prior to heading outdoors.
  2. Set up integration time so that the detector is not saturating but still able to get optimal S/N ratio.
  3. Set up boxcar to smooth the spectrum.
  4. Measure the solar irradiance and store your data on Jaz’s SD card.

Questions:

  • Did you know SpectraSuite Software now merges spectra of 2 Jaz spectrometers together and displays them together?
  • How is this function called in SpectraSuite?
  • What’s the difference between relative irradiance and absolute Irradiance?
  • What will relative irradiance change in your measured spectra?
