Using the remote connection feature for a Jaz Spectrometer in SpectraSuite

Nov 14th, 2008 by admin | 0

When utilizing the remote connection feature in a Jaz unit, it is important to have the correct IP address.  Some have struggled with this concept so it is important to understand the basic IP information for your network prior to attempting to connect to your Jaz unit.  An IP Address (Internet Protocol Address) is an identifier of your hardware connection to the network.  Every device on the network is assigned a specific number which identifies that device on the network and to other network connected devices.

Networks are normally set up in two ways for the assignment of IP addresses.  Static IP addresses are assigned to the devices on the network manually by the network or system administrator.  Automatic assignment of IP addresses requires that the network have a DHCP server to assign addresses to each device automatically when they connect to the network.  You would need to find out which method your network is using from your network administrator in order to properly utilize the connection to your Jaz spectrometer remotely.

To set up the Jaz unit after you have determined if your network supports DHCP or manual network address assignment, you will need to select the X button from the Jaz Unit.  This will provide you with the main Jaz Menu.  You will see three options:

Spectrometer - Network - System Tools

Select # for the Network Menu.  This provides you with two more menu options:

View Settings
Edit Settings

Select # to access the Edit Settings menu

On this screen you will either select Auto, if you network is set up with DHCP, or Manual to manually enter the IP Address.  If you select the Auto option, you are ready and will return to the Network Menu Screen.

If you select Manual, you will need to enter the information provided by your network administrator for the IP Address, Netmask, and Gateway, then select Apply Changes.

If you are uncertain of the information contained in these fields when asking your network administrator, this information can be found on any network connect device, such as your personal computer.  Most of this information can be found by selecting Control Panel, then Network Settings.  You will see this screen:

Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then select Properties.

The screen will show you how your network is configured providing you the information that will need to go in the Netmask, and Gateway fields in your network options screen on the Jaz unit.

You will notice on the screen above, that The option to Obtain an IP address automatically is selected.  This indicates that the network that the computer is attached to, utilizes a DHCP server, and not a manual address assignment.  Only if the other option is selected with you be utilizing the manual IP address assignment on the Jaz Unit.

Please remember you cannot use the IP Address that is being used by your computer.  Only the network administrator can provide you with the IP address you must use on the Jaz Unit, as this must be set up on the network.  If you mistakenly use the IP address from your personal computer, you will have network conflicts with two devices trying to use the same address.

You will notice on the screen above, that the option to “Obtain an IP address automatically” is selected.  This indicates that the network that the computer is attached to, utilizes a DHCP server, and not a manual address assignment.

After you have set up the IP Address, you can then select the X on the Jaz Unit until you return to the Network Menu.  You can then select Edit Settings to view the settings from either the DHCP server that has been automatically assigned, or your manually entered settings.  At this point it is important to write down your IP address that shows on the Edit Settings menu.

Open the SpectraSuite software.

Select Spectrometer from the menu option, then select Jaz Spectrometer.  You will have a screen which provides you a default IP address:

Erase the IP Address and type in the IP address provided to you on the View Settings menu that you wrote down from the steps above.

You will be notified that you are successfully connected to the Jaz Spectrometer.

From this screen, select Finish.  You now have access to the Jaz Spectrometer and can begin taking your readings based on your experiment.  See the SpectraSuite manual for additional help in operating a spectrometer utilizing SpectraSuite.
